Almond Blossoms was painted in 1888-1890 in Saint-Rémy and Arles, southern France, for his nephew, Theodorus van Gogh; This work was given as a gift on his nephew's birthday. In those days, Vincent became very interested in Japanese arts and was active in the Ukiyo-e school. For this reason, this work gives visitors the feeling of Japanese paintings.
