Literally every European country with a port was at the colonisation game First attempt in 1867, US ultimately withdrew Second in 1902, for a lower sum; Denmark ultimately withdrew Then WW1 forced the issue, and also… the United States accepted a Danish demand for a declaration stating that they would "not object to the Danish Government extending their political and economic interests to the whole of Greenland" Amusing how this comes up
