Why do militaries or soldiers follow what dictators say? For example, what is happening in Venezuela. I’m sure the soldiers have families who are ready for a change as well. Is it as simple as “obedience”?

Often it’s the case that the military and the government are tightly intertwined, which has a relatively more common history in South America than the global norm. Egypt another classic example (you could argue since the Mamluks). Maduro was previously a bodyguard, militant revolutionary, and kept close ties to that wing of Chavez’s party during his political career
