Granted, I have no understanding of European laws, but what is all the fuss about Elon hosting the AfD leader on a spaces? https://x.com/ThierryBreton/status/1875482430955532694

Lots of Germany perceive - with much justification - AfD as Nazi disciples, and Breton seems to be really going hard at Musk as a separate matter (he is an EU politician not a German one)

> AfD as Nazi disciples are they? I asked this other day and nothing seemed nazi. The party leader is a lesbian whose partner is a Sri Lankan woman I get that they're very nationalist and anti-immigration, but those ideas are not nazi and dont feel "far" right https://warpcast.com/ryanrodenbaugh.eth/0x79984dd6

They want mass deportations and while that is not an idea restricted to Nazis, for the country that invented Nazism and did lots of this, it brings up those old memories I’m not German but there’s probably more and generally the Nazi accusation probably follows those ones. For cultures which never elected Nazis or suffered the enormous consequences, it is probably very hard to understate the role this plays in the national psyche

Bigger picture, Germany in many respects in like a elephant in chains For a thousand years (since Charlemagne), Germany was split up into towns and led by neighborouing powers who were afraid of German strength should they unite Then they did unite in 1871, then humiliation in 1918, then doomed democracy until 1933, and then the Nazis The Germany we know today was built in the aftermath of a country which had a deep lack of confidence and a deep humility and embarrassment, entrenched by the post war division which literally only ended 35 years ago. Poland is still demanding war reparations. Adenauer who led Germany for a decade plus grew after WW2 up during empire, saw its failure, and then again the failure of democracy, and national humiliation It is a country with a deep aversion to assertive leadership and geopolitical dominance. This is so distinct from the USA, which exists Because its founding members sought to dominate its continent. Germany is an elephant in chains that it is scared to break
