An AI model is more like a dog than an intern. The key way to understand AI intellect is as something which does ‘think’ in its own way, but in a way which is very different from our own. This doesn’t mean we can disregard it: like a dog, an AI thinks differently to us, but humanity use dogs, and AI, to achieve its goals, so it’s important to be able to manipulate how it thinks.

The intern framing captures the sense in which an AI is less capable than its instructor, but an intern is similar to its instructor in terms of how its brain works, whereas an AI is not. In addition, the intern framing completely ignores how an AI is great at a wide range of things for which a human brain is poorly suited.
