Iām probably in the minority here buuuutā¦ Toxic X Engagement tactic: post a defensibly well-meaning but provocative question. Then when people answer in good faith, reply with extremely specific questions which attack the responderās lack of nuance (which the medium does not allow). Why itās toxic: it shifts the burden of proof from the person asking leading questions to the responders. Itās also exhausting and cuts down any meaningful conversation from good-faith respondents (the people who continue to engage are usually emotionally charged). This tactic works very well on X, and I see it being used here a bunch too. I donāt like it, though.

Reminds me of an IRL āart installationā which asked you to vote on ādo you support capitalismā and when I voted yes a 20-something art student engaged in āgenuinely curious discussionā about why my opinion was wrong. My response: I grew up in a shithole ex-communist country so I know capitalism is better Her response: oh but have you considered other forms of non-capitalist societies? Me: like what exactly? Her: Iām not here to provide any meaningful engagement, I only ask open-ended questions until you admit that Iām right and youāre wrong Then when the argument got heated she decided that she felt āunsafeā and asked the event organiser to ask me to leave. 100 $degen
