Mistakes I made my first time raising (for Scalar GP round)

- did a party round since was oversubscribed and had a hard time saying no, reduces incentive for people to help

- focused on brand names more than who is helpful

- first pitch was a VC we really liked, hadn't practiced enough and should've saved for later

In hindsight, not letting it show that I was tired of telling the same story over and over. I'm sure it slipped sometimes but mostly kept up my enthusiasm on each pitch

This was for Scalar GP (management company) round so it was a lot closer to a startup round than raising from fund LPs. These investors shared on ownership of our fund and any future funds we started

It’s interesting to hear the emphasis of names brands carryover from startups to raising a fund.

I wonder why we’re all so conditioned to pursue that (and I know there are great name brand VCs)

I would imagine there are probably some differences as a GP vs a founder/operator, but I think something that rings true regardless is that partnering with the wrong capital partners will be the bane of your existence.
