Listened to a podcast talking about how people have basically always had dyslexia but it only really became apparent once inventions like the printing press made reading more widespread. Makes me wonder what potential disabilities exist now but will only display in the future with new technologies

I think there might even be new disabilities born from our ever burgeoning dependence on technology. Thinking about all of the people who have developed hardcore addictions that started with technology, myself included.

I think literacy is a latent problem currently. Yes people can read and write, but understand is still such a small subset of people. With AI, I think we are going to see this uncovered.

Anything with a large generalized spectrum (i.e. ASD) seems ripe for more specialized diagnosis. Especially since having a son, it's really apparent just how rough our categorizations are. And as the categories become more specialized, we'll probably gain insight into mechanisms and further detail into the condition. Adjacently, wonder if you've ever read http://johnsalvatier.org/blog/2017/reality-has-a-surprising-amount-of-detail ?

Yeah, we’ve always been innovating faster than we could evolve. You could be pithy and say terraforming the world is easier than terraforming ourselves.

seems like to a degree this is contingent on technologies exposing latent senses (e.g. various visual acuities needed for reading) i think a lot of recent tech is moreso acting as sense replacement (e.g. texting as pseudo-telepathy), so moreso abt what faculties are downstream

That's so crazy to hear fr I wonder what other disabilities might be hidden in plain sight, waiting for new technologies to reveal them. One thing I’ve always wondered is if we'll see a surge in diagnoses as VR and AI become more mainstream

I think about this a lot as my oldest has dyspraxia/DCD. I look at so many of the issues he has and wonder about our similarities and how much went unnoticed before.
