Besides Emacs, which ones can edit files remotely via ssh?

Oh no, I wrongly assumed that Emacs was the only one that could do it. It's been a while since I used anything else, to answer your original question.

I assumed they could all do that. 

Or do you need to ssh first and then start an editor session?
