Are we missing something the US have or are we just lazier?

De-globalisation has much greater benefit to the US econ than UK too I expect - see the latest US rhetoric of fear on China flooding the market with cheap products. Number go up more in US if they can control supply given the size of their distribution channel. Meanwhile UK still dealing with 2008 austerity…
