John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was an American industrialist who founded Standard Oil, dominating the U.S. oil industry and becoming the wealthiest American ever. His business practices led to antitrust laws, and in 1911, Standard Oil was broken up. Rockefeller was also a major philanthropist.
