Ted Joans was a radical poet, artist, & key figure in Afro-Surrealism, fusing struggles for liberation with surrealist expression. His art, like his life, was incendiary—turning everyday Black experiences into powerful critiques of society. Joans' work, now showcased in "Jazz is My Religion" at Zürcher Gallery in NYC was a vibrant mix of poetry, painting, & collage that shattered norms, broke new creative ground, and challenges us to do the same today.
