Personally, I don't take pleasure in the misfortunes of my family, friends, or (as I'd like to think) humanity as a whole. However, my interest in schadenfreude was piqued when I realized that I was following with enthusiasm the financial and legal troubles of a well-known politician. His troubles don't affect my daily life, but it's clear that schadenfreude isn't foreign to me, as it isn't to most people.
