As someone who has not used VR aside from phone-based headsets years ago, is there ecosystem lock-in with these? i.e. should I be evaluating what's available on meta vs htc vs sony or others?

Yeah games bought on one platform won’t transfer over. I would strongly recommend just getting Quest 2. Meta has a big lead on content and it will take at least a couple of years for anyone to catch up.

If I can find someone who has one to try it out first I might. You think this new one isn't worth the substantially higher price tag?

I see the Pro as a devkit for MR and social presence features that will eventually run on mainstream headsets (Quest 3, 🍎). If you’re planning to build something, it makes sense, if not get Quest 2.
