It’s interesting to me that nobody really considers what the role of government is when there’s discourse. Instead both sides cling to their misshapen beliefs that their side is right without ever considering what the fuck they’re right about. If a government and its budget does not exist to help the people, what then is its purpose? To keep corporations alive? To fund education? To fund wars? Give aid to other countries? If the governments primary function is not the leading and securing of its citizens, why does it exist? And if we can’t answer that, then I don’t care if you’re left or right. Your decision making is fundamentally flawed from the jump.

I don’t think the government solely exists to help people. I think in some instances it does but in a lot of instances officials use it to make themselves wealthy.

I personally don’t think most people have actually thought about what is the purpose of a government. I don’t even think elected officials have. And because nobody has thought about it, we have instances of officials using it to make themselves wealthy.

I understand what you mean, but I do think the answer to that depends on what each individual wants the government to be for them. To say it’s to help people may be a subset of people’s vision for the government.
