surely we would rather wreck our own economy and make it so no one can afford things than to let immigrants have jobs that nobody else wants anyway https://www.ft.com/content/24959793-7828-4ddc-9379-376d3590c718

Eh it’s not really that Americans don’t want the jobs. Construction companies don’t want to pay minimum wage plus workers comp that American workers get. It’s a lot cheaper to pay illegals below minimum wage, so construction companies will choose illegal immigrants over Americans. While I think a lot of the deportations are fucked, I think it’s also fucked that companies take advantage of immigrants trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. They should be paid at least minimum wage and get the same workers comp coverage as Americans.

based on cited market movements in OP i think it’s fair to say that Americans don’t want the jobs at comps “that the market is willing to bear”. unemployment in construction has already been low at 3.9% by last two decades’ standards. despite having immigrants ease our labor shortage the issue remains widespread. if there is a wage exploitation issue it is clear that these are not jobs Americans are fighting over. i don’t think America is ready to have the conversation you are alluding to until we can actually fill the job openings that have already been and remain up our ears despite alleviation from existing immigrant workers https://hbi.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Fall-2024-Construction-Labor-Market-Report.pdf
