Things I'm grateful to Canada for: • parliamentary democracy (a better stepping stone towards liquid democracy than the perverted joke of a system in the US) • the comparably limited role in offensive militarism (though that is changing for the worse) • abundance of, and prepensity towards, renewable energy • willingness to acknowledge and try to address historical and ongoing systemic injustices But—and this is crucial—I won't be celebrating Canada Day. Not because of the many many failings of Canada, from the rising corporate corruption of politics, increasing militarism of the police forces against citizens, or unfettered support for a genocidal regime. No, I won't celebrate Canada Day because the soul reason these kinds of holidays is to imbue nationalism into the citizenry. And that nationalism can be used to any means. You should always reject the urge to worship the idol of the state. It is always a revisionist idea of that country anyway. More thoughts below 👇

I think there are alot of reasons to celebrate and many not to. I don’t see celebrating canada day as worshipping the state personally (Considering several levels of government have tried to cancel Canada Day celebrations). I do see it as being proud of my individual identity however What am I if i’m not Canadian?

I would hope (and even without knowing you, believe) that you are are more thnings than just "Canadian." Still I respect your right to celebrate it, I'm just hopeful you can break apart the meaningless words and the intentionally vague symbolism, into things that are worth being grateful for. This is the problem with nationalism is it seeks to define what Canadian is for example. And in absence of a clear answer, people start inventing one. You see this with the US who has imposed white nationalism into the nationalism. Revisionism is key to forming a "cultural identity." So celebrate Canada Day however you like but avoid making assumptions about who Canadians are or what defines them. What defines them as Canadians is the stamp on their birth certificate or citzenship papers. How we act is what defines us as being worth celebration.
