potentially dumb question but can someone explain the logic of “subletting” your apartment out for 2 weeks while you’re on vacation? 

like is rent really that high or are people really that cash strapped or what?

People are cash-strapped and rent is out of control. I can't even afford a one-bedroom apt in the area I live on my salary. I live in a basement suite in my friend's house, and trying to figure out a way to have a better income. Main reason that I don't sublet like that when I travel is that I feel weird to have strangers stay in my home. I did have a friend stay in my apartment while I was gone once, but I didn't ask him to pay for it. It was as a favor as he was in-between places.
