At work, I use the paid version of chatgpt, and recently someone very close to me asked if I could share my account with them. But I just couldn’t do it. It felt too personal, even though I have no problem sharing passwords for my phone, laptop, or other apps.

It reminded me of a dystopian novel called Pandem. In the story, a being called Pandem comes to Earth and talks to people through a ‘voice from above.’ It answers their questions, helps them in difficult times, and seems very much like God knowing everything and almost all-powerful.

I’ve been catching myself thinking more and more about the parallels between that story and gpt. It’s like having a personal dialogue with something that always knows more than you do and answers all the questions you have

It keeps information organized in separate chats - for example, you can upload a huge document to a chat and then ask questions about it or do a quick search. You can even customize a chat for personal use.

For me it feels personal because of how often I use it. Even though I never talk to it like a person and stay critical of the information it provides (pro tip: never trust it with quotes, haha), it’s basically replaced my browser as my primary search tool.

One time, I was sharing my screen with a colleague, and my chat was open. She commented that she liked my queries - because with work-related chats, there were really casual ones like ‘Which breed is dumber: Australian Shepherds or Samoyeds?’ or ‘Steps for installing laminate flooring.’

No one’s going to dig into browser settings to check your history, but with this, everything’s out in the open - and it’s a bit embarrassing!

Why does the paid gpt feel too personal to you?  From my understanding it's not learning anything specifically about you... I thought all the information you enter goes into the training models but gets diluted by all the other data as well... or is something else going on?

It probably also depends on how often you use the chat and your field of work

For me gpt makes life easier by providing clear structuring, whereas good specialists don’t always explain things in an accessible way - what’s simple for them can be confusing for others
