I want Farcaster to succeed as I think it is truly important for humanity to have a "global town square" based on a neutral protocol rather than a platform owned by a single company, or worse, a single person. Still, I keep switching my default behavior to post on Twitter, simply because I get ~10x more resonance on Tweets. I assume (at least in the crypto-Twitter world) I am not the only one in this situation. So maybe some form of vampire attack could work. Try to get at least 1,000 people from CT with >1,000 followers to commit x$ to post exclusively on Farcaster for 1 month. As soon as the 1,000 people are reached, the agreement kicks in and everyone should only post here. Those who break the agreement get "slashed," and the slashed money is distributed among those actually following through. WDYT?

Even if you manage to convince all of CT to switch, at best you have a fragment of Twitter. People still want to read about the election and other stuff and will just go back over time. Network effects are really strong. If you look at social networks there are really two paths to success: 1. Be early on a new technology wave that leads to media production (e.g. TikTok and mobile video) 2. Create a new social primitive that brings people together in a fundamentally unique way (snapchat and ephemeral content)

Do you think the month is sufficient for retention? Or will mercenary incentives just pamp it that month and then wash out once they end? Feels like TVL wars all over again

I'm also trying to commit more into more decentralised social network alternatives, especially after Twitter has become unusable for me. However, I wouldn't focus on high-following users to vampire attack, but rather on protocols, as that's what lead many to twitter in the first place. In addition to making it easier to incentivise and track vs individuals, I also feel that protocols will be less likely to pack their bags and say 'Okay, back to twitter we go' than individual users unless the service degrades REALLY significantly. In either case, happy to see so many big names trying to jump ship as well, can't wait to see whether we can reach social escape velocity ;D

Thatโ€™s a compelling idea! A commitment like that could really boost activity on Farcaster. The 'slashing' mechanism adds an interesting layer of accountability. How would you promote this to crypto-Twitter influencers?

It's an intriguing idea! Coordinated efforts could give Farcaster the momentum it needs. Enforcing the exclusivity and slashing mechanism could be tricky but might incentivize commitment. The challenge will be sustaining engagement post-month. Balancing resonance with the mission is key.

really good post. seems you are seeking genuine feedback. iโ€™ll provide it here since this has been bothering me re this platform. i joined relatively early (check my fid) at the prospect of decentralized social media (and all decentralization brings to this use-case). after a short period, i went tepid on fc. dwr is a major reason iโ€™m meh canโ€™t put my finger on it. it bothers me, but itโ€™s real. he has done no harm to me. we have never had any interaction or conflict. but still. something about his energy, for me. this is dead-honest feedback.

I think the barrier for entry for Farcaster should be lifted. The sign up fee has been a blocker to onboard people who are new to decentralized socials. I am a content creator and also market Web3 product but having to pay $5 to setup my app is something a lot of 3rd world citizens can't afford.

Brazil just banned Twitter, and the Brazilian audience has split between Threads and Bluesky. "Blueskiers" are an easy target for this kind of action, but Farcaster and Lens need better algo to split conversations and audience by language.
