No doubt this plays a factor. Personally, I'll take the 'average' reward over hoping for a lottery block, but others feel different. The donations made a huge difference though, distributing ~8x the EV over the last 21 day cycle.

One thing I have thought about is how the human psyche may be preventing many users from signing up to the smoothing pool.  Humans have an intense fear of missing out. Joining the smoothing pool makes sense to the vast majority but "what if"? For the users who do get the big payout, that is a big blow, and a fear.
