We have 5 hives. At any time that pretty much assures us at least 1 maybe 2 will make it through the winter. 

The rookie error is only having one hive. At least 2 preferably 3 would be my guidance if you’re just starting out.

Not much time ‘doing’ at all. A common mistake of enthusiastic beginners is to over inspect hives. oc if you like to read watch & learn as a hobby you could count that as consuming spare time.

Is bee keeping much work? I definitely would like to try it, but I don't have that much spare time
