This makes me bullish for crypto Kids don’t care about IRL. Their sense of attachment to it isn’t the same as mine, for better and worse And Digital lives need digital money Generational differences like this drive new tech Ex: Netflix grew with millennials who had different prefs than prior gen

on the contrary, i think this is insanely concerning. we have to figure out a way, ideally by leveraging crypto and blockchain, to make kids care about IRL or else we are doomed as a species. digital lives will always exist, but we need — on an evolutionary biology level — IRL to thrive and be our best selves.

So that's a few things they aren't doing as often. What are they doing instead? No license, no car. Do they carpool, bus, Uber, or forgo traveling all together?

Anecdata, but I have 3 teens + 2 pre-teens & this is true for the 2 oldest. However, there is also self-awareness + desire for things to be different. One is looking at colleges & his eyes light up that one of them gives you a kayak and a garden plot with your dorm even tho I cannot even picture him *near* a kayak lol

One interpretation is they don't care about IRL. The other (at least when it comes to "Ever date" line as I assume they're interested in romantic relationships) is that they aren't skilled in navigating IRL.

I’d be interested to see the 10 years between the end of the chart and now. I’d guess every line has gone down even more

Really interesting chart. The work for pay one is really disconcerting. But this graph also shows how different GenX really is too. But totally agree with your take —digital lives, spaces, money are more & more the norm.

This actually makes me bullish on businesses that brings IRL experiences that us of the younger generation cares about. For ex you local club, etc that hosts activities and make it easy to make friends etc, but deffo also crypto :)

Also, imagine trying to get a bank account and debit card as a 14 year old. That’s a pain Now imagine getting a wallet as part of onboarding to a game, selling a skin you got for attending an in game concert, and using that money to buy something online Banking the unbanked

The end of this chart shows the effects of the Great Recession. Two of the dramatic dips were due to that. Teen work for pay & driver’s license. Many traditional teen jobs were not available or taken by underemployed adults. Teen insurance was more than many families could afford. Even now, ride share is often less.

Interesting trend! With most digital experiences now happening on proprietary platforms and within corp walled gardens, I agree crypto has the potential to make digital more “real” through ownership. How to avoid financializing everything will be key.
