I have been struggling to articulate exactly why but this just feels like advice for men. I don’t think it works out the same way for women to simply follow your intellectual interests No one complains about over educated men, but they scream and scream and scream about over educated women. Intellectual pursuits are not necessarily the same as education and when I look at this quote from him I actually agree and think applies regardless of gender. BUT you are 💯 right that intelligence is not as highly valued in women. Especially by men. This has been my experience my whole life. In my 20s I made playing dumb into an art form. What I’ve found is that men who are secure in their own intellect are able to appreciate a smart women. Those who are insecure usually do not.

idk replace his -obsession- with passion and it becomes dull advice bout -follow your passion- which is obvious and kinda nothing new? I see your point on the genders differences tho, and that's just sad, but also feels like a shifting field. so doing whatever you damn please sounds fine to me (without expecting society to reward you) today's society's values might not be the ones of the society that has to judge your intellectual pursuits in a few decades

I agree with you yes the advice is inspiring, but it assumes a level of acceptance that doesn’t always exist for women. Society often historically scrutinizes educated women in ways it doesn’t for men, labeling them as “overeducated” or out of place.

In this century where we have women running companies better than any man would, where we have woman running countries better than any man would people still complain about educated women? This isn’t 1960 anybody with such mentality shouldn’t be allow to live amongst we humans tbh
