I completely agree with you if only because I feel this. Your competition is the world. Have to be the hottest, the smartest, the most successful and you're benchmarked against everyone in the world

I would think it would have to do with perceived competition in the form of highly curated social media content. 

The feeling of not measuring up is not only highlighted, but extended from teens to 30+. 

I'm sure there are other factors, but this has to have some impact.
