we should have that too but more like how germany's used to be: military OR a volunteer program that lasts a little longer than the military counterpart if you object morally or religiously.  maybe each state can do it instead idk. i had a friend that did the german one and he always complained about having to dig ditches in the forest 🤪💀 sounded outdated but turns out that was super relevant
