It's all a hall of mirrors. In many respects, all we can see is self (the world processed and painted onto our visual cortex and into spatial perception, to start), and yet when we look for self the observer, we can't find it. More and  more I find the hard problem of consciousness itself is perhaps an illusion. Consciousness must feel like something, so this is what i feels like. Lots of loops.
