Recently, I've been asking myself questions instead of a list "I need to do". For example, instead of "do: xyz", more "why do I need to do xyz?", "is this important? when will you come back to it?", "did you do xyz?" and then responding to it - huh why did I not think of this earlier?

Part of this comes from a realization that most of my todo lists weren’t getting done because context surrounding why or how or why etc was generally missing, it also just feels so much more forgiving, and easy to do - answer the question first and then do things, allows for planning and thinking things through

100%. There was the mindspace you were in when you took the note, and when you read it later. There is a difference in those mental states, and the flow of your brain's mental states, based on external and internal pulls. What I try to achieve is to hone my mental states to where those mental states are diverse enough to be able to think of things from different point of views as I am going throughout life, but at same time build consistency and be able to transition out of mental states; aka not get stuck. There's a certain structure the mind has to be in to accomplish the task: with the right questions in mind, the proper framing, the context, environment, and so on. The hard part is when you write a note down, and when you read it later, and know you want it done, and it's almost as if you lack the mental facilities to get back to why you wrote it down in the first place with the building blocks to carry out the task in the way you want it done.
