I think one of the original sins of our current financial infrastructure is that financial accounts aren’t asset agnostic 

Completely understandable on why we evolved where Yen, USD and equities must be in separate accounts

But we’re past those old limitations and assumptions

I feel this way about geographical borders

Iraq / Syria / Iran: I’d like to talk to you about the Sykes-Picot Line

Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916) was a secret convention between Great Britain (Sykes) and France (Picot) that chopped up the Ottoman Empire into modern day Turkish-held Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine into various French and British-administered areas very arbitrarily drawing the lines - unaware of future consequences

The arbitrary imposition of state boundaries produced by the Sykes-Picot Agreement generated a substantial incongruence between “territory” and “identity”

So much so that the narrative for the existence of the Islamic State (IS) is a backlash against the decision of Sykes-Picot, decades later. IS claims they will reverse all borders and remove spheres of influence of the West under one caliphate (while ironically fully ignoring the “Kurdish Question”)

While the Kurds have been been displaced repeatedly since the time of the Safavids (15th cent) -- there was even as late as the 20th century a Kingdom of Kurdistan in 1920s

The death knell was that while the Treat of Sèvres -> the Treaty of Lasaunne, when the lines of modern Turkey was drawn

Wish the Kurds would’ve gotten some slice of this

Tell us about the siege of Kut Al Amara. The great lose of the British Empire and Sykes. Sykes Picot was only in your wet dreams.
