When I was younger, I have a memory of a moment of total and utter despair: the moment when I realized I wasn't sure I'd have enough time in one life to be able to be friends with, to spend time with, and to change their lives, to love everyone that exists in the world I don't have this despair anymore

I had this feeling in the 4th grade, and the most palpable realization was that I’d never be able to read all the books that I wanted to

As I read, Freud's thoughts on Transience came to my mind. He writes how the transient nature of life, humanity, and the beauty of human creations or culture paradoxically enhance their value. He sees the refusal to accept transience as a rebellion against mourning and loss. Like I touched upon past melancholy and grief.

I never had this feeling in my life. Probably because I was too busy in surviving. I remember having a controversial relationship with time, I couldn't wait for it to pass to move on to the second phase, a phase that seemed to never arrive. I have always erased from my memory all the people who passed in the first phase of my life and I have never done anything to make them come back. Now I have a feeling of missing something but can’t do much anymore.

Love thrives best, I think, when it's unevenly distributed in areas approximating our point of existence. From that point it can propagate through our loved ones, their loved ones, and on and on. Like bounded electron, each of us is a single point of potential energy. When we are target of love/kindness/attention we become excited and come to a higher state, ready to give it away. All we can do is shine strong enough to excite others around to lighten up the whole horizon. The best we can do is to have fun while doing it.

I have this feeling often when I finish a story (a video game, a creative project, or the run of a play). For me, it’s the awareness that I’ll never know all the stories, the great passions, the ideas and the people—that I will miss far more than I’ll ever get to encounter. It is, at once, a deep sadness that my capacity to experience is finite, but it invites hope, a sense of purpose, and, eventually, joy as it becomes a call to move deeper, more intentionally into the embrace of the ephemeral and, so, make meaning of my one, brief life. I recommend the poetry of Mary Oliver as a companion and friend-on-the-journey when you need one to navigate this feeling.

That's some deep and powerful stuff. If you're open to share, I'm curious to hear your reflection on what changed to free you from that despair
