Just finished this. Reminds me of how J.R.R. Tolkien was a huge fan and drew so much of LOTR from Beowulf. I felt like I was reading The Hobbit for parts of it.

Ooh great suggestion. Read an older version in high school and loved it. Amazing how much myth permeates our culture

"...the poem begins with the word 'Bro!' and Queen Wealhtheow is 'hashtag: blessed'..." ―Danielle Trussoni, The New York Times Book Review Amazing. Definitely picking up a copy.

check the The Prose Edda by Snorri if you haven't, great stuff and also lots taken from it by Tolkien.

I haven't read it; it was on my to-do list as a teenager. I will have to add it back to my list 🤓

I felt the same way reading the Norse Eddas. If they had been packaged as unfinished Tolkien stories, I’m not sure I would have questioned it.

Only this is the alpha… weird when a first cultural reference is the derivative, isn’t it?

for sure, I also love how much Tolkien drew from Beowulf in creating Rohan; the Golden Hall of Edoras even takes its name, Meduseld, from the earlier work. I'm a fan of Seamus Heaney's translation, will have to check out the Headley.

One of my favorite novels is Grendel by John Gardner. Sounds like gimmick — Beowulf retold from Grendel's POV — but in Gardner's hands it works. Mind you I read it like 20 years ago, but one of those I'd expect to hold up on a re-read.
