Any favorite spots to visit north of Tokyo (Tohoku region)? Ideally, easy to get to via Japan Railways (JR pass).

Kanazawa is a cultural center like Kyoto with less tourists imo. More Tohoku Shinkansen side: Sendai, Matsuhima, Aizu Wakamatsu, Ginzan Onsen, Zaoo Onsen, Hiraizumi / Morioka, Aomori, Hachinohe, etc lots of different things to do at different places

Great list. Thanks. Sendai is nice (went there last trip). What was most memorable about Kanazawa?

TLDR; The Maeda clan / Kaga-han, rulers of the Kanazawa area during Edo period early on decided to invest in arts and culture instead of military power, with the intent of appearing non-threatening to avoid confrontation with the Tokugawa Bakufu. Over 100s of years, Kanazawa became a place that prioritizes the arts
