Great composers and musicians have shown that music first arises in the mind and heart of the creator, not in the instrument that plays it. For example, Johann Sebastian Bach, a master of the organ, composed complex works in his mind before committing them to paper, long before they were ever played on any instrument. Beethoven, who lost his hearing in the second half of his life, continued to compose some of his most iconic works, such as the Ninth Symphony, without being able to hear a single note on a piano.
