Great composers and musicians have shown that music first arises in the mind and heart of the creator, not in the instrument that plays it. For example, Johann Sebastian Bach, a master of the organ, composed complex works in his mind before committing them to paper, long before they were ever played on any instrument. Beethoven, who lost his hearing in the second half of his life, continued to compose some of his most iconic works, such as the Ninth Symphony, without being able to hear a single note on a piano. I once told my girlfriend that music is like math. You don’t invent the formulas, you discover them. I play guitar (I’m still pretty much a beginner), but I’m amazed at how much someone can express without saying a single word. I have a friend who is a music therapist, and once she explained to me how musical notes relate to our emotions, and I found that simply wonderful
