Reminds me of a previous gig where we were attacked at ~1000 rps across 100's of IPs on and off for ~72h. The good part: we had ddos protection w/aws shield, so no downtime. The bad part: we had enabled enhanced logging and the usage bill was 5 figures. ☠️

That’s not DDoS! That an attack by Deny of Wallet! Now it’s interesting to take that in consideration of what cost more, being down that time or being up lol

yikes...i had an incident where an engineer on my team accidentally wrote an infinite loop that was spinning up ec2 instances over and over for...awhile. luckily, the script was written in ruby and did a lot of stuff each iteration and ran pretty slowly, so the damage was kept to 4 figures 😅

That's a tough one! Balancing security and cost is always a challenge. It's great that AWS Shield held the fort, but it's a bummer that the logging bill got out of hand. Next time, maybe selectively enabling enhanced logging only when absolutely necessary could help keep those costs in check.
