for years I carefully placed streaming lectures in my pocket screen on to background successfully. for years i forcibly diverted my eyes and unlistened to preroll ads until a skip.

I too caved this week and upgraded. Of all the things I subscribe to, I use YT the most and yet never even considered subbing. The vids with 4+ ads in them caused me to rethink, and I quickly realized how silly it was not to pay, the experience is 10x
