Back in 2018 the Avalanche Team was going to launch an EVM chain called Athereum which was a full system state clone of Ethereum, using Snowball consensus instead of Nakamoto consensus.

The Avalanche's team was called "Team Rocket" because those were the bad guys in Pokémon trying to stop "Ash Ketchum" who's Japanese name was Satohsi.

They launched 3 chains

X-Chain: Their take on Bitcoin which has no smart contracts but has 2-second actual finality.
P-Chain: Their Platform chain which is where all of the layer-2s and gaming chains are built on top of.
C-Chain: Their EVM fork that started from zero with their AVAX token.
