name registration is such an obvious way to monetize decentralized/federated communication protocols you have to wonder how many times it's going to happen in the next few years for many i think it'd be tough to give up potential revenue to ENS (or in the future fnames) just because they got there a moment earlier

I think one hybrid structure which could achieve the best of both worlds (revenue/control for issuer + compatibility with ENS) is that services leverage ENS subdomains with special treatment in their product (+ fees, additional functionality)

so for instance, fnames would in the background be ENS subdomains of *.farcaster.xyz. in that structure: * can charge for them as they see fit * can expand functionality of names permissionlessly * can display in app w/special treatment * get auto compatibility with every app that already integrates ENS

maybe a dumb question, but what does ens compat help with? ens integrations afaik are "lookup contract and swap address with result". supporting ens subdomain seems just as difficult as supporting arbitrary namespace? for us, the benefits of having our own namespace are lower gas costs and simpler contracts

my simple mental model is that any product which supports ENS (either resolution or reverse resolution) would support farcaster names by default, rather than needing a custom integration. so for instance, your farcaster username would auto-work in coinbase send/receive.

maybe i misunderstand how RR works with subdomains. if i were to mint bar.ens and issue foo.bar.ens to my wallet and then open it with coinbase wallet, would it show up with no work on coinbase's part today? or does coinbase have to approve bar.ens' contract address as a valid name resolver?

and also, what if i have multiple ens names from different subdomains in my address

if you set foo.bar.ens to your wallet, you can send to foo.bar.ens in coinbase and it will work with no work on coinbase's part if you set your address to reverse resolve to foo.bar.ens, it will reverse resolve on sites that integrate ENS with no work on their part (coinbase doesn't currently reverse resolve)

currently our custom *.cb.id resolver doesn't support reverse resolution and this is something we're actively working to solve... but once we solve it, it will solve it for all offchain/L2 subdomains. L1 subdomains work as expected today.

re: multiple subdomains/domains, reverse resolution is a separate setting from resolution. so many domains can resolve to the same address, but an address can only reverse resolve to one domain. so if you have multiple names, you need to pick which one reverse resolves.

e.g. I have both jessepollak.eth and jesse.xyz pointing to the same address, but i've set the address to reverse resolve to jesse.xyz
