How did the conversation around you joining the Coinbase executive team come about? How does this change your day to day operations at Base and what does this mean more specifically for the future of Smart Wallet? How many people do you realistically think are onchain today?

1/ @barmstrong, @max, and I started talking about the possibility of me working on @coinbasewallet ~6 weeks ago. all of us were seeing all the great work the base + wallet teams were doing on smart wallet and how bringing them together could accelerate making the platform really great. we've all been working together for a long time, so it felt natural to just talk through it and figure out what was right. that took a bit of time to shake out, but ultimately we decided that was the right path forward. i actually hadn't thought about joining the exec team through those conversations, but then once we started actually making the change, it made sense.

2/ should change very little for base — i have a great leadership team on base that i'll continue working very closely with. and there's basically no changes to their plans as a result. the big exception to that is smart wallet, which we're accelerating by bringing together the teams that had been working on it across orgs (with @wilsoncusack at the helm). i think that's going to be a massive accelerant for making the wallet "just work" for both developers and users. lots of work to do. 3/ from triangulating on all the data, I think there are somewhere between 5-10m people who are doing some sort of onchain payments right now, and 1-2m who are doing some sort of onchain trading, and <1m who are experimenting with the emergent onchain social, music, gaming, etc that we're seeing start to bubble (and be really exciting!). so much room for growth — and I think we're finally starting to have the products that can make it happen.
