To wrap up my Foto Friday, let’s go with one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

On New Year’s Eve in 2017, there was a bench collapse on the Big Island which severed a lava tube, creating this lava hose spilling millions of gallons of molten lava into the ocean, with explosive results.

I tried to keep my images to my absolute best, but there were more I still wanted to share… had to get the lava hose shared, and I still have to work around my PT schedule from my knee surgery. Second set of exercises now.

Yeah, like I love this photo but it is impossible to explain what this was like in person. I also took a “wide angle” frame at 200mm to show the boat near the bottom of the lava hose (and the guys standing above it) as a sense of scale, but I didn’t think to take a cell phone shot from where I was standing, or video, for that matter. It’s like I always forget my DSLR does video.

This is mind blowing to think you saw this in person. So good words don’t do it justice!

Yep, pretty powerful… I generally don’t like people in my images, but sometimes you need them for a sense of scale, right?

Not only the boat, but if you zoom in above the lava hose, you’ll see the guys that forgot to bring their telephoto lenses.
