my guy and i were attacked pretty aggressively by a swooping bird with a sharp beak while mountain biking the popular Derby Trails in tassie. i thought maybe it was a one-off event, but it turns out magpies have not only killed people in defense of their territory, but injure hundreds of bikers a year and nearly blinded some toddlers. we were descending a pretty technical rock section at the time and things def coulda gone sideways quickly if we weren’t wearing protection at the time. filing this under things you only learn about while traveling. we didn’t have cameras on, but check the link for footage of these birds in attack mode: https://youtu.be/p5njR8rNEro?si=OuIfyzUCWOs7_4s-

The contraptions (southern) Aussies have to make during swooping season 😂 For those playing at home, no - we're not a real country
