also how do you reorient your mindset to a positive/growth one around exercise from a “i should / have to do this”

For me it’s getting the workout done first thing in the morning before I start any other activity. And following an app is super helpful. I prefer Fitbod.

@tylerbenmark has the “get up early” mental cheat code that he can use at will…years and years of 4am swims 😂 I’ve never been a morning workout guy, but the flexible post-COVID work world has made me a lunch lift person. Also forces you to get in there, go hard, and get out.

Habit stacking in the morning and an app that builds me a workout based on what “gym” I’m in. I have regular gym, hotel gym, home gym, and no equipment options so I don’t have to think about it - I just go.

When I was able to stay consistent it was all about having a program to follow and having each month+ planned out like in 5x5 or 5/3/1. I've been struggling with getting motivated to get back into it after an injury though...

i use a trainer through future.co. couldn't recommend it enough. had a similar issue with consistency before, but now i feel dedicated and it's whipped me into routine. the app is really well made too

Don’t break the streak. Once you get going, don’t miss your lifting day. If you’re really stressed/not motivated - tell yourself you’re going in to do just 1 rep… and everything else is gravy. You’ll find yourself doing your whole workout. One strategy is the starting strength novice linear progression…

Go day by day, plan for closer goals to see rewards as you keep moving, this will help with your motivation as you see improvements in a short amount of time.

just keep showing up, no matter how tired you are. a good workout is a done workout, doesn’t matter if 1hr or 15mins. show up to build consistency, then talk progress. gym tip: get your gear ready the night before each session. consistency tip: take no more than 5 secs to act in your initiative.

I just have to go every day and do *something* …not for everyone, but missing a day after 10 in a row feels better than missing a day in a two on, one off split.

I work with a trainer at a local independent powerlifting gym. It's a luxury for sure, but is a great self-investment. It has been key in keeping me accountable and getting the most out of lifting.

Routine + a lifting partner. It helps that I do feel better when I exercise regularly and lifting is the most enjoyable exercise I've found.

make lifting automatic/easy/not overly painful. Eventually you get strong enough to really appreciate the benefits too. - this app tells me exactly what / how to lift each day https://apps.apple.com/us/app/starting-strength-official/id1008697836 - gym is close to home/work - very conservative about increasing weight
