a lot of these new websites for creatives (thecosmos, are.na, zora, read.cv, etc) just seem like they’re trying (and failing) to recapture the nostalgic spirit of what tumblr used to be

Eh, hard to agree on that. 

Especially with Comsos not having a social layer and prioritizing curation above all which is an entirely different user experience than tumblr.
