a scorpio mural i saw today on an old brick building on monastery ln, halifax, ns i think this was done within the past year and i hope the full zodiac is hidden around the city 👀 i'm unsure of the artist; the signature looks like MATT? it's kinda brutalist in this area so it was a welcome colorful interlude 🌞

time for a post about a little side-quest i do that involves early cemeteries (~1750-1920) in my province 💚 a fave symbol of mine commonly found on victorian-era headstones is the willow tree... while the symbolism we usually associate with victorian mourning tends to be on the morbid side, victorian-era headstones bear witness to a shift away from the earlier skulls and crossbones and "memento mori"-style symbolism and towards much more pastoral and nature-based religious symbolism, such as wheat, lambs, doves, lilies, and the beautiful resilient willow tree. anyway, i was going through some photos today and wanted to highlight a few victorian-era willows i've come across locally, all hand-carved and in the unique style of their carver. some are simple, some are full of flourishes and detail, and all are skillfully relief-carved. so beautiful 💚

one of my fave things about my city's green spaces is their desire paths desire paths are essentially unplanned trails created by ppl moving repeatedly along the same route, usually as a shortcut and often near a formally designed path. they're usually the most direct or convenient way from one spot to another. these 2 pictured are a couple that have been in use for longer than i've been alive - the first is on halifax's citadel hill, the 2nd is on the halifax commons design may accommodate needs but often overlooks instincts... it's interesting to me that the many formal paths created by city planners on these 2 sites continue to be maintained (and generally used by the public), yet ppl still often choose to walk the grounds intuitively instead... myself included we're such unruly rebels, eh? no matter how "intelligently" or aesthetically a space is designed, we'll always find ways to inject a little organic asymmetrical chaos for ourselves.
