positives: you’re likable to the people you’re trying to appeal to, gain status in that group which can lead to opportunities 

negatives: loss of independent, critical thinking, frail sense of self worth that fluctuates with group sentiment, inability to work on unpopular (to your group) things for long stretches of time

Definitely a bad thing 
Has zero positives to it
