A lot of the tech industry was built on the foundation of academic research and experiments, and many founders came directly from that space (e.g. Google)

These ppl have moved out of academia. Academia sciences are basically just one big fraud and only keep this perception by leveraging the past + getting compliment news outlets / scientific pubs to run stories about “breakthroughs” that, coincidently, are oh so close! Just need more funds

Here is another way to think about this: if every university research dept ceased to exist (today, under the current regime), would progress accelerate or decelerate? The answer is obvious and a good proxy for x-axis placement absent surface level functions

I think there is a lot of waste but also enough important innovation that if all public research programs were shut down the western world would not be able to maintain its global technological leadership position. But we can should work to remove the waste.
