Noland Arbaugh, a quadriplegic, became the first patient to receive a Neuralink brain implant. After a swimming accident in 2016 left him paralyzed, the implant allowed him to control a computer interface with his thoughts, regaining digital autonomy. Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk, aims to develop brain-machine interfaces to address medical needs and enhance human capabilities. Their implantable chip reads neural activity and converts thoughts into computer commands, using 64 threads with over 1,000 electrodes. This technology shows promise for helping those with paralysis, mental health issues, and visual impairments. Clinical trials with Arbaugh started in January 2024 to assess the implant’s impact on his life and its performance. The day after surgery, he could move a cursor using his brain.
