🇺🇸75-MILLION-YEAR-OLD “SWAMP DWELLER” DISCOVERED IN COLORADO
Paleontologists from the University of Colorado have unearthed a rare fossil near Rangely, Colorado: a nearly 75-million-year-old Heleocola piceanus, or “vertebrate swamp dweller.”
Resembling a rodent, this muskrat-sized marsupial weighed around two pounds, considered large for Cretaceous mammals.
The fossil, found where Colorado’s ancient inland sea met swamp lands, reveals a region once bustling with aquatic life, including turtles, crocodiles, and sharks.
Professor Jaelyn Eberle celebrated the discovery, noting, “A lot of cool things come out of rural environments.”
