Your favorite songwriter is very unlikely to be a virtuoso. To truly master an instrument in a way that studio and other for-hire musicians must, it is necessary to not be too creative. Creativity gets in the way of acquiring as many skills as possible efficiently.

straight up facts a virtuoso musician is much closer to a master craftsman than a creative genius

Why do you think it is so rare to understand this?

bc most people have never/will never play an instrument just like most people have never/will never make a wooden chair it’s not their world and musicians don’t really talk about artists vs performers bc imo the “magic” of music goes away when you realize that parts of it are mostly reps/grit/woodshedding

much more common in classical music, where the performer PERFORMS the piece, but in almost all cases did not COMPOSE it. lang lang is an absolute viruoso, but not a song writer. this is much less often in other genres of music where the writer is the performer and performing other composers works is seen as inferior
