Is there anyone here who’s willing to vouch for Infinite Jest? I’m not far into yet but it’s feeling like the Jeff Koons balloon dog of novels I’m on the fence about abandoning it and a credible endorsement or two would tip the scales @keccers.eth @tldr @links @phil

if you're not vibing you're not vibing "The important thing is to be ruthless with the books that are not good. Just stop reading, put them down, usually throw them away, don’t give them away. If you give them away you could be doing harm to people"

Excellent quote. But I didn’t realize how good Ulysses was until I was 4-5 chapters in and realized how each section relates to the others. I flaked out of The Red Badge of Courage the first time I read it because Henry was so insufferable in the first half of that book. And so far I can convince myself that Infinite Jest is immature and overwrought because the unreliable narrators are precocious tightly wound children. And a stunted man child I guess. There’s enough energy in the system at this point that if it coalesces into something meaningful and cohesive, it could be remarkable. But I don’t want to stick around if it’s just a thousand more pages of “gifted kid on amphetamines handcuffed to a Dell with nothing but MS Word and Encarta 95” chaos Really seems like it could break either way at this point
