might be wrong, but it feels like farcaster has lately (understandably) been marketing itself as the place where to earn magic internet money, rather than focusing on attracting users through decentralization and its related core values and imo now—right after the tiktok ban—is the best time to double down on decentralization as its value is more tangible for people

I think it’s path dependency of distribution channels/WOM Farcaster seeded with crypto native users whereas the other two are a bit different/more non crypto crowd, and the emergent new user base is downstream of that

1. FC/Nostr/Lens combined have <10% of the DAU of Mastodon or Bluesky, I think? 2. Anyone using the phrase "alternative to the tech oligarchy" is talking about left-wing partisan alternative, not just decentralized vs centralized

The Venn diagrams of the crowd that hates Elon full time professionally and that thinks crypto = scam is a circle.

all of the above i dont think this matters here (relative to the other stuff listed re audience size and overlap), but i also think the media actively hates crypto and fc is "too crypto"

maybe simplest explanation is 1) lack of mindshare vs. BS/Mastodon and 2) normies hate crypto, FC is crypto coded

I don’t think Farcaster is purist enough to get free coverage and I don’t think yall are willing to pay.

I think crypto is inherently a subculture. And so, regardless of how welcoming Farcaster is, maybe there will always be a limited subset of people attracted to it I was a non-crypto person when I joined Farcaster. And even though everyone was very nice and welcoming, the presence of crypto content felt alienating for awhile. Like I was intruding in a space that wasn’t meant for me But there’s a much lower concentration of crypto-specific content now. And so maybe the experience is different for someone new joining today But I guess what I’m trying to say is, maybe it’s not so much an issue of the content/people here being niche. And is more an issue of, people see that word “crypto” and write it off as not meant for them

word-of-mouth headwind against financialized tech, which even nostr qualifies into. also, bluesky and mastodon moderation are distinctly similar moderation and provide the platform and corresponding audience that the writers want.

Whenever the media mention the Fediverse, they call it "The Mastodon Network" (sic), that gives me enough evidence that they do very little research.
